Rocking out to Ben Folds and more

Filed under: Personal | 3 Comments

I decided to try and use the iTunes Music Store to branch out my music collection. There are a ton of talented artists that I’ve never heard. My best discovery thus far has been Ben Folds. The Speed Graphic EP is amazing. Great piano work, but the songs have more energy (thanks to the drums) than most other music lead by a piano.

The White Stripes are also frequent visitors to my playlist. I never got into them before the iTunes Music Store, but just about everyone else did. I’m really digging retro rock these days.

Matchbook Romance sounds a little too much like Brand New, but still good enough to make the rotation.

Other favorites in the past month or so are:

While not all those are from the iTMS, it has really led me to some new stuff. Anyone have a recommendation?

Welcome

Looking at my referrer logs tells me there are a lot of people coming via search engine queries for my name. I assume you saw the iTunes / Pepsi story somewhere. For my personal resume, can you please tell me where you saw the story? Either via email (jon AT macmerc.com), AOL IM (jonknee41) or comment. Thanks!

For everyone else, this will be the last time I make a post about myself in this manner. I really do hate it. But I need to bulk up my clippings file.

A look at my hatemail [updated]

I thought I would publish some of the more recent hatemail I have received. Why? It made me laugh, hopefully it will make you laugh. These were all over the recent “analog hack”:

Update: I’ve added more, they are on the top for ease of reading. Really funny stuff this time. They are all unedited (e.g. the grammar mistakes are original).

I’m sure this isn’t where it stops in your life…
I can see it now…well no officer, the beer isn’t mine…it’s his… and his older brother bought it for us….

Your a tard

Why in the hell would you give away the secret? Dumbass.

It is a childish and ignorant way to promote you stupid website. It’s this type of behavior that gives honest e-businesses a bad name. Please remove that article and apologize to everyone who played fair and square.

PALS AND I BACK IN 1996 WERE DOING THIS TRICK TO FIND “YOU WON A FREE 20OZ” ON PEPSI AND SPRIT BOTTLES. DO YOU REMEMBER THOSE YEARS!!??

This trick has been around since pepsi points. you havent figured out shit.

Thanks for making the Mac community look like assholes, I hope the publicity
was worth it to you.

Is this how your parents raised you? How to beat/cheat the system? You buy a soda… you either win a free music download or you don’t. The soda will cost maybe .99¢; quench your thirst and a chance for a free tune. Or forget buying the soda and go onto the Apple music store and download a tune for .99¢. Hmm, .99 cents.

The epitome of petty.

Get a life and don’t be a dink!

why would you give this info away? do you have no respect for the people who try to make a living ? how do you make a living? its losers like you that make hackers look bad.

jackass.

Considering that you’re so intimately aware of my Mountain Dew story, I can only assume that you’re an iPod Garage regular reader. Once a thief, always a thief, I guess.

All it takes is one dumb person to ruin it for the rest of us by postingsomething like that? What were you thinking??? Now they are going to change that for the future games.

Thanks a lot! not

My main comment is:

WHY TELL THE WORLD!?! SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST!!!

You big idiot!!!

What are you 12 years old????

Get a life!

Now wasn’t that fun? There were many more nice people than mean people. It’s just cute that people actually go out of their way to complain about something as simple as tipping a bottle. It’s in no way original to MacMerc. Just the right place at the right time.

My attempt at a meme

MacMerc posted instructions detailing how to not lose the iTunes / Pepsi promo. It’s the most popular thing we’ve ever published, proving that sugar water and music rule the world. Thanks to all who linked:

And a whole bunch of bloggers / forums. It was really a thrill to see a link on sites that I idolize and read daily. Now, back to drinking sugar and rocking out. Thanks for making my day!

MovableType searches for “at”

Filed under: Weblogs | 3 Comments

MobileTracker gets a lot of searches (for a site of its size). This is only due to the subject matter, and in no way a reflection of anything else. The interesting bit is that I get 10+ searches a day for the word “at”. Just at. All from different IPs. I can’t figure out the utility of searching for something so common. Any ideas?

To spare my server from working, I made MovableType only serve a max of 50 results for searches.

Hey look, it’s MobileTracker playing the role of a highschool student. Honestly, I’ve never liked the design of MobileTracker. It was never meant to last a year. But hey, at least someone likes it.

It’s my birthday

Nearly every year around this time it’s my birthday. I’m a “year older”. Feels like just a day :-D.

Get Wired mag for $5

At Amazon you can get a year’s worth of Wired magazine for $10. That’s a great deal (83¢ an issue), but they have a promotion that gets you $5 off your next purchase from Amazon. For someone like me, that’s $5 off. So a year of Wired for $5. Can’t beat that.

I’ve never bought a magazine subscription from Amazon before, but I hope it kicks in quick. My Wired sub lapsed last month.

Another cease and desist

Not many moons ago, I had never been legally threatened. Oddly enough, I saw getting threatened by a company because of something I posted a measure for success. First it was Adobe, then it was Apple. Now it’s Sony Ericsson. The video was costing me a ton of bandwidth to host, so it actually helps things out. If you’re a webmaster, don’t be a jack ass and link directly to a video. Link to the page, and help a brother out.

Addicted to Curb Your Enthusiasm

Anyone else addicted to Curb Your Enthusiasm? It’s genius. I’ve watched every episode of Seinfeld, so the experience is twice as nice (the co-creator of Seinfeld is the subject of CYU). It’s Seinfeld with no script plus cursing. Beautiful.

The natural feel, sort of raw and uncut, is what has me hooked. I’m all about dry humor, and Larry David is about as good as you can get. It’s the minutiae of life expanded to unrealistic lengths. Pretty much what I try to do on a daily basis.

If you don’t have HBO, and still want to check it out, drop me an email / comment and I’ll hook you up. Thanks to Larry for the tip.
