Sunday afternoon

Most people read their papers, I scan mine. Besides scanning Sunday inserts I am busy moving MacMerc to Pair. Once it is all complete we should be much better off, but it’s a huge pain to get there (www, forums, blogs makes for a lot of configuring).

Zippers in wallets

Are just a bad idea. No matter the design, the zipper ends up making a buldge that is totally unnecessary. What kind of man really keeps a lot of change in a lil zipper pocket anyway?

TED KOPPEL: Bruce, let me put it very bluntly … Who the hell is Bruce Springsteen to tell anybody how to vote?

Yahoo! Local

It seems that Yahoo! has launched a local search results page to go head-to-head with Google. I read a news story on it, but it forgot to mention the URL (Note to author: when writing a story completely on a new website, mention the URL). I just guessed that it would be local.yahoo.com because it’s local.google.com. That was easy.

It works pretty well, and since Yahoo! has registration if you are logged on it already knows where you live. Pretty slick. The UI is easy to use, I love the ability to change parameters on the side.

MobileTracker update

My baby is growing some legs. July was very kind to MobileTracker–it did over 250,000 pages to over 100,000 unique IPs. I have been working for 1100+ posts to get this far. Such a great feeling.

The graph includes RSS feed traffic which pushes pages over 300,000. The figures above excluded RSS.

Sound Scan report costs

Filed under: Personal | 5 Comments

I was interested to see how much Sound Scan reports cost… You have to request pricing info, which usually means that there will be sticker shock. There was. Not sure what all the different levels mean, but nothing is cheap:

My dreams of having insider info are over. Wonder what the TV ratings start at?

Sound Scan is a way to see what music is being bought. Most retailers send their sales data into the mix. I am not sure if they get paid for this or not. If they don’t, Sound Scan may just be the most profitable business ever.

WalMart.com needs defensive design

Filed under: Rant | No Comments »

I pretty much despise Wal-Mart to begin with, so this is biased, but still has a good point. To get an N-Gage as fast as possible (the quicker the review up the better), I decided that WalMart.com would be the best bet. I make a point of not shopping at Wal-Mart, but for this item things changed (it’s the same price everywhere, Wal-Mart probably has the biggest stock, they won’t steal my credit card info, and so on). Yesterday, the 29th, I got an email:

Subject: Walmart.com Order 2677067355895 Delay

We’re sorry to say that your order has been delayed due to a delay in our fulfillment process. Unfortunately, we
were unable to ship the item(s) you ordered below by the late we originally gave you. We are working with our suppliers to fill your order as soon as possible, but we are currently unable to provide a revised shipment date for your order.

We will continue to attempt to ship this order. However,
you can cancel the order at any time up until the date the item(s) are actually shipped.

Please note that if we do not hear from you and we have not shipped your order after 10 days, we will automatically cancel your order and you will be notified.

I could go all Defensive Design and note that the subject includes a (to me) meaningless huge number, but I won’t stoop that low. I was happy to get word on this. It’s a lot better than said device never coming and me not hearing.

I did some hunting around and found one locally, bought it, and then cancelled my WalMart.com order. All is well until today when I get a UPS package from WalMart.com with an N-Gage. It was shipped the 27th. That is two days before the email saying they won’t be able to ship it.

I love that you try and notify me of problems, but do not lie to me. Now I have to return the item at your expense.

N-Gage QD is hot

Filed under: Praise | No Comments »

Like most people, I had a lot of fun poking fun at Nokia for its original N-Gage. It didn’t really game that well (no hot-swapable games) and it sucked as a phone (side talkin’). However, things change with the N-Gage QD. I picked one up today for review at MobileTracker, and I am liking it.

The QD has a big screen, nice size, runs Symbian and even has Bluetooth. And you can pick it up without contract for $199. That’s pretty impressive. It also has a MMC slot that you can load up extra memory in.

The only thing I haven’t liked about it in the hour or so that I’ve played with it is that its keypad will take some getting used to for text messaging. It’s made for gaming, so this isn’t really a fair complaint.

I’ll have the review up in the next week or two with some nice pictures (there’s a Nikon D70 in the house for a few weeks).

iTunes on Motorola phones finds trouble

Filed under: Rant | 6 Comments

Sometimes I hate cell phone carriers… This is one of those times. Some analysts believe that cell phone carriers will refuse to carry any of Motorola’s phones that come with iTunes (starting next year) because it lets users load the songs THEY OWN without paying for data transfer. Amazing.

Just in case they don’t realize, this isn’t new–any phone with Bluetooth lets you upload ringtones/download pictures. I bypass your data transfer services all the time. It’s faster, easier and cheaper.

Why would I send 256MB of music over a cell network that charges me a dollar per megabyte $0.03 per kilobyte, or a cool $30 a megabyte*? What happens when I want to change my playlist, do I spend another $250 $7500? Insane.

* That is AT&T Wireless’ data fees according to their website at this time: “With GSM service, you will automatically receive limited access to AT&T Wireless GPRS data service for $0.03 per kilobyte on any domestic GPRS network.” Yes, I know you can get unlimited data for something like $80 a month, but let’s say you forgot to add that to your plan before sending a few CDs to your phone.

Why are there political conventions?

Filed under: Rant | No Comments »

I know journalists like getting drunk, but why are there still political conventions? Voters don’t watch them (I couldn’t even find the Dems on broadcast last night), they turn cities into war zones and they cost a lot of money.

Now of course the cold hearted republicans should be expected to waste millions on a worthless week (and if what the Dems say is true, they will likely hire handicapped black women to serve their rich corporate donors at their parties), but why is the sensitive liberal throwing all the money away? Why not put kids in afterschool programs? Or send kids to college. How about medical care for homeless? There are a lot of uses for the money. I thought libs were supposed to care?

Political conventions are worthless in the modern age. Set up a big website for $1 million and webcast all the speeches. It’s not like you’re preaching to the choir anyway…
