MySpace

Do any readers out there have MySpace accounts? In the last 6 months MySpace has pulled away as the winner of social networking sites, putting Friendster to shame. I’ve been getting a lot of enjoyment out of it lately, especially in finding new music/movies. Not to mention a few dates.

Send them Ketchup!

“Clothing is wonderful, but let them go naked for a while, at least the kids,” – Teresa Heinz Kerry

She’s got quite a bit to learn about pull quotes, politics, and frankly people actually listening to her. It would almost be worth having Kerry as president to have endless streams of rich-nonsense come from her mouth. Almost.

USA Today price hike

Filed under: News | No Comments »

The recent price increase for USA Today (now 75¢, up from 50¢) was a pretty blatant move to try and increase the percentage of subscribers. Ever since the hike I have seen promos to, “Beat the price increase” if you subscribe. At first I said I wasn’t going to just based on principle–don’t like being walked into things–but I subscribed yesterday via Amazon.com because it’s a lot cheaper… 40¢ an issue. And then there is the whole finding three quarters to get a copy from a machine.

I would be interested in seeing how many new subscribers they got from it.

My date with TransFlash

Filed under: Praise | 2 Comments

I got my first TransFlash card last week and I must say that I am impressed. This little devil is the size of a dime and holds 128MB. If you want to compare, it’s 15 x 11 x 1 mm. I would really like to see more mobile phones with TF, since it can help keep the overall size down. You can barely spot the slot in the Motorola V710. Now when I hold a Compact Flash card, it feels like I am holding an ancient artifact. Praise the future.

If you wondered how you would get data off the card, it comes with an SD sized converter–just put it in the little slot and you can pull it off like you could from any SD. Slick.

Here’s a picture:

Mobile Mapping

Some mapping software for Series 60 mobile phones from MDM was sent out to the house for review, and I am overall quite impressed. It comes on a 32MB MMC card, which has enough space to load up 5-10 metro areas (Tampa/St. Pete is a biggy at 5MB, most are 1-3MB). It’s called Directions on the Go and I will have a full review up at MobileTracker in the near future.

Before I post it I’ll see if it’s hackable–can I put it on a bigger MMC card to have extra space for more maps/other applications to run on the phone. While it’s nice to have the space of an MMC, it’s not cool to have several that you use.

Here’s a screenshot:

Jimmy Eat World, Futures

Filed under: Music | 4 Comments

Jimmy Eat World’s Futures has a lot more energy than Bleed American, but since I liked the upbeat songs on Bleed American most, this is a great thing. These guys launched the whole emo rock scene, and are back to show the newcomers how it’s down.

Here’s one of my favorite songs from the release. I expect it to go platinum pretty quickly (quick for a hipster rock band, not Britney-quick). I know I’ll pick it up when it officially launches in October–you should too.

RSS Update

I have found a solution to my RSS love-hate problemBloglines. I have come to the realization that since I am always in my browser or in my email (sometimes the email is in the browser), RSS in the browser would be easier. I loaded up my unused Bloglines account with 20-30 feeds and they are just a favorites bar click away. There isn’t notification for new items, but I really haven’t missed it. If I am 20 minutes late to reading something it is not the end of the world.

Also new from my pass on NetNewsWire, I haven’t followed Mac news much at all. I get the press releases, so I still know halfway what’s going on, but I haven’t missed hearing about a 3.2.x update of software that I don’t have.

Any other Bloglines users out there? It spanks Kinja around.

Ivan [update]

Filed under: Rant | 2 Comments

We have yet another hurricane coming to play–Ivan. This could be an upgrade for Tampa–from a Cat 1 last Sunday to a Cat 4 this Monday. Crazy.

Update: It’s now a Cat 5… That’s pretty rare. Winds near 160MPH.

I still hate Don Germaise

Filed under: Rant | 10 Comments

Just for the record, I still hate Don Germaise. His lame storm chasing ass got on the weather channel and Clear Channel FL radio (our local powerhouse AM station is simulcasting around a ton of Florida Clear Channel stations to give storm coverage). I don’t know what kind of conspiracy this was, but Don is NOT cool/entertaining/talented. I swear he’s on speed.

In other news, we’re now getting a little wind. I’d say gusts of 40MPH or so, as I type this I can hear trees swirl. I don’t think the power has flickered off yet.

Storm blogging

Interesting use of localized blogging here… Our local paper has a blog written by a woman (non journalist it seems) in Nassau. Since I am a cynical reader, I assume that the same copy is being given out to other Knight Ridder papers across the South, but I have not checked that out. And if you want to get technical, it’s not the actual news paper site that has the weblog, it’s the Tampa oriented portal that serves as a gateway for the paper and TV station.

Also, it’s not as much of a blog as a frequently updated page–no permalinks. But it’s great to read a local take on something big like a hurricane. Good work TBO!
