Transfering contacts to a new phone [updated]

It has been a while since I have tried to transfer contacts to a cell phone without Bluetooth or a SIM card (I typically use GSM phones). What a waste of time. I tried to send a contact over via SMS but the two phones don’t speak the same language evidently.

I know I have had my head in GSM for too long, but is there a service (maybe directly from Verizon Wireless) where I can enter contact information in and have it sent to the phone? I can’t imagine they expect people to sit down and type in a few hundred contacts.

I am testing the Audiovox CDM-9900, a nice consumer level camera phone with a killer QVGA resolution display.

Update 10/6/04: Here’s the psychic in me again, Verizon Wireless today announced some software that can do just what I want.

Looking for a WordPress templater

Filed under: Weblogs | 1 Comment

Anyone out there willing to make a WordPress template? Thinking about moving MobileTracker over to WordPress (and a new server, but hey that’s my job). It will be a new design, but it will be different than most WordPress templates. I have already hacked the URLs to match the current ones, but I need help in these areas:

1) The categories list should be like it is on the current site, not a big list.

2) Archives need to only list first x words or headlines, can’t have full posts because it is just too big.

3) Insert ads thoughout the site, inbetween posts on the index and archives

If this sounds up your alley, let me know (comment please). I’ll reward you well for your time. The new design is related to CarbWire’s if that helps.

Amazon Associates redesigned

Filed under: Praise | 2 Comments

About time! A new design for Amazon Associates launched today. I have been a member since 1999 and this seems to be the biggest change since that time. Back in the day you saw more information (orders were grouped my customer, privacy issue!) but it looked pretty much the same as up until yesterday. My favorite new feature would be the pull down to select other IDs, that saves some time.

Amazon associates

On a sidenote, I decided to run a big report from 1999-2004 to see my total sales… $46774.89! Take that whoever said affiliate programs wouldn’t work. If each of Amazon’s 1.2 million associates sell the same amount over the next 5 years, it will total to a massive $56,129,868,000 (about 10x the sales for 2003).

Google and Yahoo, round 2

My boy Om Malik is working a story hard–Yahoo has a patent, via its Overture purchase, that looks to have control over ads keyed to search terms. This is where about 90% of Google’s revenue comes from, so it should be a very interesting time. I hate patents on the web. Hate.

Why can’t the USPO get a few web developers on staff to help explain things.

Psychic?

I have a weird ability to visit a site right after they update, and before Bloglines knows about it. Maybe I am just cut out for news, but I can’t count how many times it happens.

(It just happened again with Russell, a usual suspect.)

Am I crazy?

Etymotic ER 6isolator earphones

Filed under: Praise | 1 Comment

Per some advice given in this post, and various reviews (C|NET, MacWorld, etc) I decided to purchase a pair of Etymotic ER 6isolator earphones. They came today–got them from here–and I’m jamming out with them now.

The noise cancelling is impressive… I can’t hear myself type with almost any volume of music on. It is only barely audible with no music on. If you know how I type this is an impressive feat (it’s pretty loud).

I still have to play with placement, iTunes’ EQ and the different tips to get the best combination, but I am happy so far. They are almost worth it just for the noise cancellation, I now work in a quite office.

Are you going to watch the debate?

Are you going to watch the Presidential Debate tomorrow night? It starts at 9pm ET. I will be there even though I know who I will vote for.

This could be one of the more interesting years to watch the debates–Bush is known to be very “to the point” while Kerry is all about nuance and massaging the point. I wonder if our 30-second culture will be more tuned into Bush because of this.

It’s make it or break it time. Exciting!

Milk gestapo

“Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry told voters in America’s Dairyland on Monday that President Bush had a secret plan that would hurt milk producers after the election.”AP

The secret out, 2% is actually 2.05%. What did he know and when did he know it?

Jeanne and Frances took the same road

I just combined some tracking charts for Hurricane Jeanne and Hurricane Frances… Oh man are they similar. Feel free to pass this around. Scary!

From what I have heard this is the closest two hurricanes have landed in this short of time (since we’ve kept track).

Terms I never want to hear again

(But that I have heard waaay too often in the last 5 weeks)

1) Hunker down – 694
2) Feeder bands – 228
3) Evacuation order – 2,650
4) Storm surge – 9,380

I am sure there are more… I have stayed away from TV news today so I’m a bit rusty.

The number to the right is the number of media citations Google News has for the term at this time.
