“To troubleshooters, the shuttle presents a labyrinth of wires, cables, signal boxes, transistors, diodes and capacitors — one of the world’s most sophisticated machines. It enfolds 230 miles of wiring and 1,060 valves alone, and about 2.5 million parts

This Widget for Tiger ties in with 37Signals’ Backpack. It’s really slick and a must have for all Tiger usin’ Backpackers.

“A wealthy lawyer says he must be the ugliest man in the world after having 5,000 marriage proposals turned down.” (or maybe he should just stop proposing to hookers…)

I am about 10 years to young to understand all of the references in Family Guy so this will probably be my homepage on Sunday nights.

Steven Levitt on monkies being introduced to money… and its effects: “What he witnessed was probably the first observed exchange of money for sex in the history of monkeykind. “

Like Uncrate for all housewares. Most of the items seem to be actually available for purchase which is refreshing.
I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this past weekend and was fairly impressed. I have only white-hot hate for Johnny Depp (mostly related to his phony accent that fools people into thinking he’s sophisticated…) but was able to move beyond that and actually enjoy the movie.
While watching the movie, I was really reminded of Michael Jackson… Wonka and Jackson have similar traits: they live in a big fantasy world, children are central to their lives and according to Depp’s performance they both look and talk like women.
I had a serious chocolate craving throughout the movie, I am sure the concession stand made a killing that night.

Perhaps the best mugshot ever.

“The new Harry Potter book sold an astonishing 6.9 million copies in its first 24 hours, smashing the record held by the previous Potter release.”
As noted by Rick, today is the birthday of iCal. When closed the application shows July 17 in its icon. When opened it shows the current date. Neat!
Is iChat down? I haven’t been able to log-in for over an hour. Odd.

Great reference sheet for mod_rewrite. My dev cycle with mod_rewrite is typically copy, paste, hack (all from the previous project I used it on). Bad, I know. Maybe this will help.
I just downloaded the latest version of PHP Nuke to take a look at how the source has progressed (I haven’t done much with it since version 5.X which is what MacMerc still runs, though we’re going to switch to Drupal). Well, it hasn’t gotten any better (either in code quality or user experience). PHP Nuke may be the most bloated CMS ever. Look up feature creep in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of Francisco Burzi in a PHP Nuke shirt. Amazing that it is still being actively developed.
I’m glad I wrote these guys off years ago!

Real lawn furniture. This looks crazy.
I finally got the 24″ Dell display that I ordered last month and it was well worth the wait. This thing is hot. My PowerBook is able to power both its 15″ display and the new one, leaving me with an amazing 39″ of pixely goodness.
Why I chose to go Dell over Apple:
- Cheaper, but both Dell and Apple use similar screens since they both just repackage OEM equipment.
- Dell offers a three year warranty versus just one year from Apple.
- The Dell screen has so many inputs its silly, I’ll be able to hook a Windows box up to it for testing purposes (there is a button on the front to switch inputs).
I haven’t figured out how to get the memory ports on the side to work (Compact Flash, SD, etc). That may be a Windows-only feature. Other than that, it’s perfect.
