Economy down?
I listened to a speech today (given by a classmate) about how bad the US economy is. When I got home this afternoon, I saw 45 job postings in the Craigslist RSS feeds I follow (web dev jobs for a few cities in the state). If you’re smart, the economy is kicking butt. It’s not just web stuff, Craigslist is full of jobs across a ton of sectors.
If you want work, go find it. If it’s in another state, get a map. If you need to learn, buy a book or go to school. Stop complaining that India gets all the jobs and think about making a better widget.
I’d be interested in hearing how your personal economy is doing. Hopefully well, otherwise you are probably enflamed in anger. Sorry.
Update: The numbers are swinging back in line too. Look for jobs to make a big uptick soon.
45 jobs for 350,000,000. Not bad, not bad. (Just kidding, just so you know.)
And what if you’re not ‘smart,’ Jon? I’d be interested to know what the perspective is from people in the nonprofessional sector. Not everything is done behind a desk.
Incidentally, I *do* work in the professional sector and I earn two thirds more than the normal going rate for people at my skill level (and this with only trade qualifications), so it’s not just me being defensive.
Raena: What I meant about “being smart” is someone that is a go getter. Most people don’t know how to find work.
I work in Career Services and do career counseling all the time. What many people are finding frustrating about the job market is that no one is handing them a job. For those willing to look, and focus their efforts, there are jobs to be had. It just takes more personal motivation than it did in, say, 1999.
I totally agree with you. My mom and I had the same conversation earlier today. We both agreed that the people out of work should make looking for a job their full time job until they finally get a job. Also people need to be smart enough (as in having common sense not necessarily “smarts”) to go to a library and learn to write their resume, and to learn what interview skills they need. Also, people need to stop saying that ______ job is not “good enough” for them. If it comes down to me not having food because there’s no job good enough for me, or me working at McDonalds so I can go to the grocery store…then I’ll take McDonalds, thank you! It comes down to laziness really.
As for Raena’s argument. Well let’s put it this way; in every job I’ve had I have worked with a disabled (blind), mentally challanged, or physically challenged (almost 80 years old) person, and they all did a great job at their position. Therefore, not being “smart” has nothing to do with it. And just so you know, “labor” jobs (aka: not “behind a desk” jobs) are some of the EASIEST to come by, AND they pay fairly well.
My Own Economy
Jon Gales made a post to his blog about the economy, he says: “If you want work, go find it. If it’s in another state, get a map. If you need to learn, buy a book or go to school.
The Working Mac Manifesto
The tech economy has been bruised for years now. With as many tech – and Mac people looking for jobs, it’s worth noting that we are our greatest asset. Follow me here… I work for Career Services at a state…
